Melbourne's Burnley Tunnel Accident - 23rd March 2007

The Salvation Army sends its deepest sympathies to the families who lost loved ones in Melbourne's Burnley Tunnel accident, last Friday 23rd March 2007.
The Army also feels greatly for the many motorists caught in the tunnel at the time and those involved in the accident. It was a frightening and tragic experience for all.
At the scene, The Salvation Army's emergency services vehicles provided hot meals, refreshments and emotional support to police, ambulance attendants and other emergency workers. Stranded motorists also took advantage of the Salvos' support services.
The nature of the accident meant that the tunnel has been blocked for several days and on the day left hundreds of shaken drivers anxiously waiting for information about the extent of the damage and how many had been injured.
Warwick Wilson, The Salvation Army Southern Territory Emergency Services Coordinator, says, "The motorists were very patient and calm, given the circumstances, which is a real credit to them. Likewise, Citylink and emergency services responded well to the situation. We were happy to be there, supporting people in a very scary time and hope we provided some relief and comfort."
