Manny* was forced to become homeless at a young age after escaping violence and abuse at home.
At first, he tried couch surfing, but it was never a permanent solution. He turned to hostels and squats – any place he could find - until he was left with no choice but to sleep in a tent.
He was alone. Frightened. With nowhere to turn to.
He told us,
“I was moving all the time. Sometimes I wouldn’t sleep, worried that someone was going to steal my belongings.”
Manny started working in a restaurant, but he still couldn’t afford to rent a room. Despite trying to get back on his feet many times, he kept getting knocked back.
He was robbed, taken advantage of, and mistreated in so many ways...
“There was one time I came back and everything was taken out. The tent was ripped up. I didn’t have a spot to sleep. I didn’t know what I was going to do.”
Thankfully Manny reached out to the Salvos who found him a place in Salvos Transitional Housing.
He was also given food, clothing, and support from a Salvos Case Worker that he could rely on.
Tragically, Manny isn’t the only one who is in urgent need of help.
Right now, an estimated 122,494 people in Australia are experiencing homelessness.
