Relocation of Salvation Army Headquarters (Australian Eastern)

The Salvation Army Australia Eastern Territory (NSW, ACT, Qld) is planning to relocate its territorial administrative headquarters (THQ) currently at Elizabeth Street in the Sydney CBD to Redfern by mid-2015.

The purchase of the proposed office building at 265 Chalmers Street Redfern would consolidate all THQ departments that are currently scattered across Sydney into one central location, and provide all staff with a more adequate and efficient working environment, delivering an improved coordination of The Salvation Army’s service operations and front line support throughout NSW, ACT and Qld.

The purchase and fit out of the Redfern site would require the use of money received from the sale of other Salvation Army properties as well as some investment funds. It is important to emphasise that no funds from Red Shield Appeal public donations would be used to fund the relocation.

By renting out the majority of its existing CBD office space and moving Territorial Headquarters to Redfern, The Salvation Army will be able to meet its increasing need for space, at a considerable overall cost saving.

The Redfern building consists of four levels with 11,213 square metres of floor space, and 175 underground car parking spaces. Part of the building is occupied by two tenants, one of which includes a Woolworths Supermarket. The presence of a long term, national tenant will help provide The Salvation Army with a solid long term and positive investment return.

The existing THQ office space will be leased out and would not only provide additional income, but also allow The Salvation Army’s ‘Sydney Congress Hall’ city church to remain in the building, continuing its traditional ministries and community services in the heart of the Sydney CBD.

It is expected that as a result of the relocation, The Salvation Army community services locally and across NSW, ACT and Qld will be both sustained and enhanced well into the future.
