Australia's largest gift giving appeal reaches halfway mark
12 December 2014
With two weeks until Christmas, Australia has shown its generosity by donating more than 101,414 gifts and contributing to a national figure of more than $30,000 in monetary donations to the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal.
The appeal assists individuals and families doing it tough. Presents collected at Kmart stores are distributed in Salvation Army community support centres to bring joy to the Christmas of someone in need.
NSW is leading the tally with 27,425 gifts, followed closely by Victoria and Queensland where more than 23,000 gifts have been collected at stores in each state.
The Salvation Army’s Dr Bruce Redman said the Salvos are thankful for the donations so far.
“With Kmart customers donating to the Appeal, we’re able to provide much-needed support to help brighten Christmas Day for many families all over Australia.
“We understand there is increased pressure on everyone at this time of year, but every donation helps no matter how big or small.”
Kmart Managing Director Guy Russo said seeing the generosity of Australians and the store teams getting behind the Appeal is inspiring.
“Each year more and more Australians find it in their hearts to give and it’s incredible for Kmart to be working with the Salvos to give to those in need. With the Appeal just over half way I’m looking forward to seeing if we can top last year’s figure,” said Guy.
The 2014 Appeal has given customers the opportunity to donate via self-serve checkouts for the first time and encouraging people to remember those less fortunate.
Now in its 27th year, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal, in partnership with The Salvation Army, has collected more than six million gifts for families doing it tough during the Christmas season.
