Focusing the lens on youth homelessness

11 February 2016

Did you know more than 26,000 young people aged 12 to 25 are homeless in Australia?

It’s a devastating fact not many people are aware of and The Salvation Army is inviting students to shine the light on this hidden issue – through film.

The “Hidden Others” film competition is open to young people living in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania aged 12 – 18 years.

This is the second year of the competition and the film entry brief is simple:

Answer and explore how youth homelessness is hidden in Australia and the causes of youth homelessness
Keep your film under 5 minutes long
Submit your film no later than 5.00pm AEST on Wednesday 20 July, 2016.
The winner or winning team will receive the opportunity to participate in a film makers course in their capital city. The winning film will also be featured on The Salvation Army website and social media channels as well as in the Schools Education program.

Last year’s winners were from Bayside Christian College in Victoria. Mia, from the winning team had this to say:

"I really loved the whole experience and I want to thank The Salvation Army for giving us this amazing opportunity. I've not only learned about youth homelessness but also things that will help me in the future for the career path I wish to take.”
The winning film will be announced during Homelessness Prevention Week in the first week of August.
