Thank you to our 35,000 volunteers
10 May 2016
It’s National Volunteer Week and The Salvation Army is saying a big ‘thank you’ to the 35,000 volunteers who are vital to The Salvation Army’s mission of helping Australians.
The spirit of service and volunteerism has been at the very foundation of The Salvation Army right from its beginnings – and volunteers make up the largest part of our workforce.
People are drawn to volunteer at different stages in life, and each brings their own unique experience, skill and energy. Volunteers like Warren ‘Waz’ O’Brien, who helps at Café Salvo - a place for society’s most marginalised people to enjoy community, food and coffee, and access helpful services.
“Waz is a hard worker, always cheerful and chirpy,” says fellow Café worker Chris. “He’s part of the furniture around here.” Volunteering allows Waz to tick off his personal goals and his love of coffee is driving him to complete qualifications needed to one day run his own café in the city. Thank you to Waz and all our hard-working volunteers!
A message to our volunteers from Territorial Commander of The Salvation Army Australia Southern Territory Commissioner Floyd Tidd:
"You are part of an army – an army of volunteers who march to the tune of creating a better world, especially for those who are disenfranchised and disengaged from the community. I have been both warmed and inspired to observe the extensive ways people contribute to enabling the work of our Army. Each role is equally important and impacts our ability to reach out to more than one million people who seek our support. Thank you for all you give – your time, experience, skill and energy and for your vital role in our army. Whether you are helping out on a regular basis or on an ‘on call’ basis, your passion and commitment
