The People's General

On Friday 29 November—while visiting Melbourne to lead a Salvation Army event—General André Cox assisted with the launch of the book, The People’s General, subtitled ‘A tribute to General Eva Burrows’, at Melbourne Project 614 Corps in the heart of the city.

The book was released to mark the 20th year since General Burrow’s retirement from active service and includes more than 200 photos from throughout her life as well as a previously unpublished 60,000-word interview.

General Eva Burrows AC was born in Newcastle in 1929, grew up in Queensland and then completed her training as a Salvation Army officer in London. She served in Africa, Sri Lanka, Scotland, Australia and England, and in 1986 became the 13th General and international leader of The Salvation Army. In retirement, she lives in Melbourne and still actively serves with the Melbourne Project 614 Corps.

Launching the book, national editor-in-chief Captain Mal Davies said, ‘The interview was filmed over three days by the National Film & Sound Archive of Australia for a website called Australian Biography that features the stories of prominent Australians. We obtained permission to edit the original transcript of the interview and it is the most intimate and insightful interview with General Burrows ever completed.’

Many of the photographs in the book were previously unpublished and from General Burrows’ private collection.

After commenting on his admiration for General Burrows, General André Cox then presented a copy of the book to her.
