The Salvation Army responds to the Nauru Riots
24 July 2014
The Salvation Army understands an investigation into the cause of the recent riots in Nauru Regional Processing Centre (RPC) will be carried out.
Until that investigation is complete, it would be inappropriate for The Salvation Army to speculate and provide comment on the riots.
Any further questions relating to the disturbances over the last week need to be directed to the relevant local authorities and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
We value the safety and welfare of our staff and can confirm all Salvation Army staff are safe and accounted for.
Since the commencement of offshore processing, The Salvation Army has worked with human rights organisations to promote the needs of asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus Island, and also the broader needs of asylum seekers in Australia. We have spoken regularly to policy makers, politicians, other NGOs and the media.
