Young people inspired by Melbourne Storm
17 September 2014
A group of teenagers from The Salvation Army’s Tools For The Trade program were given a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet and mix with Melbourne Storm.
The Storm put the teenagers through their paces at AAMI Park in Melbourne, teaching them drills but also sharing their own experiences to encourage them to achieve their goals.
Tools For The Trade is a hands-on program that assists young people who have become disengaged from mainstream schooling and are at risk of long-term unemployment to develop a passion for an industry or trade.
The Salvation Army’s Dr Bruce Redman said:
‘These teenagers are often troubled and at-risk of giving up on formal education – interacting with professional athletes who they can look up to is an incredibly positive experience.’
Melbourne Storm Club Ambassador and former player Robbie Kearns said:
‘This is the first time we’ve worked with The Salvation Army and our players were excited to share their insights into how anything is possible by harnessing motivation, self-belief and goal setting.’
The relationship between Melbourne Storm and The Salvation Army was fostered by Lumo Energy, who has associations with both the organisations and saw the opportunity to bring them together.
