John Fawkner College gets involved at Brunswick Salvosâ

In June 2017 John Fawkner College came on a youth Homeless City Tour and learnt about the effects of homelessness and how The Salvation Army provide support to those in need. The students were moved to take action, in response the group collected toiletries and also volunteered at their local centre, Brunswick Salvos. Starting in November, the students volunteered once a week during term 4 to help prepare, cook and serve breakfast and lunch at the community meals program.
An invaluable part of the experience was the group also getting to spend time interacting with recipients of the meals. Roslyn from Brunswick Salvos’ helped show the student’s the importance of the program, not just in providing food but also providing companionship and building relationships.
The program was so successful that John Fawkner College and Brunswick Salvation Army have established an MOU to sustain the program’s success, rotating different groups of students through the centre across the whole year. This partnership will provide ongoing support for the local Salvation Army as well as opportunities for students to build skills and insights through providing meaningful opportunities for students to get involved.
