In times of need
It’s often said that The Salvation Army has a ministry of “presence” – of being there in times of need.
In September 1923, a series of severe storms – classified at the time as a cyclone – swept through the southern part of the country from Melbourne to beyond Sydney, causing terrible damage, The Salvation Army was on hand to support those affected in Albury. A young Salvation Army junior soldier, Elsie Spargo, was running an errand for her mother at the time of the cyclone and had taken shelter near the old Ice Works on Olive Street. The building collapsed and she was killed. The Albury Salvation Army history book states that Elsie Spargo’s state school classmates joined with our junior girls and marched in front of the hearse. The memorial service was conducted by The Salvation Army’s Commandant Snow.
The Salvation Army in Albury still serves the community through various ministry outreaches.
The Albury Family Store is a vibrant hub of activity that is supported by the dedicated service of some 30 volunteers. It has become an essential part of Salvation Army outreach and is a place where people from all walks of life can come together in a loving, Christian environment.
Through our SalvosConnect Centre, the people of Albury can obtain assistance for all manner of financial and personal issues. We offer the services of a qualified Financial Capabilities worker who is available to work with clients as required. Food hampers are also offered to those in need via a well-stocked pantry.
