A place of worship

In the early days, The Salvation Army quickly expanded to Kingston, where meetings were held in the “Friendly Society Hall”. The local history book records that on most Sundays the officers and soldiers would have to get there very early to clean and freshen the hall after it was used for a dance or party the night before! Outposts in Westlake and Yarralumla soon followed, however by early 1957 just Braddon and Kingston remained and a decision was made to draw boundaries for the two Salvation Army corps (churches) in Canberra: the Canberra City Corps (in Braddon) and the Canberra South Corps (pictured right.) In the 1960s the Canberra City Corps grew and renovated (and in the process removed the original platform to find it was supported by nothing but a number of car jacks!) and in 1970 a new Salvation Army building, called the Canberra City Temple was opened. The Canberra South Salvation Army relocated to Tuggeranong and changed its name in 1997. In 1995, The Salvation Army moved north to Mitchell, then Gungahlin, with a new ‘Northside’ Salvation Army centre opening in 2013.
