The work in Cooma

As well as traversing the icy roads between Snowy Scheme camps to conduct meetings and support workers, The Salvation Army has always had a presence in Cooma, visiting the local prison, ministering to ex-service men and women, and even running a hostel at one stage to accommodate Snowy Mountain Authority workers and contractors while on leave in Cooma. In 1959, The Salvation Army started corps (church) work in Cooma and, soon after, opened its first building in the town. On its first anniversary as a corps (church) the Cooma-Monaro Press published a Salvation Army supplement which included tributes of thanks from the local community, prisoners in the local goal and ex-servicemen. Today, the Salvos in Cooma remain a vital presence in the community, offering church services, welfare support to those in need and a family store.
