Early opposition
Not everyone welcomed The Salvation Army to town in the late 1800s. In her book Cootamundra: Foundation to Federation, Patricia Caskie quoted a Cootamundra Herald article from 1887 about Cootamundra locals’ response to the early Salvation Army: The Army was vigorous in its street parades and attracted the unwelcome attentions of the hooligan element in town, suffering had [sic] eggs thrown at members during outdoor services and the disruption of indoor services. Despite this, The Salvation Army in Cootamundra thrived.
