A chequered history

The Cowra Salvation Army opened on 23 October 1886. Not content to sit still, its officers and soldiers expanded the ministry rapidly. By 1898, Woodstock and Marongala were listed as “Outpost” ministries, run by the officers in Cowra. However, it appears that the Cowra Salvation Army was closed in 1901. The following year, Cowra is listed as an outpost of the Blayney branch. When Blayney Salvation Army closed in 1916, Cowra is listed as an outpost of the Grenfell branch, however by 1920 Cowra Salvation Army had disappeared from the Army’s records. Two years later Cowra Salvos were back! On 12 January 1922 Captain J. Myers and Lieutenant E. Mathers relaunched The Salvation Army in Cowra, and this time, it was here to stay.
