Small beginnings

Easter Convention Grenfell

The Army made its first appearance in Grenfell on the night of Sunday-Monday 16-17 June 1887 in a tent on the Grenfell Goldfields. The Salvation Army didn’t stay in a tent for long. Staff-Captain Albiston travelled to the town to help the then local Salvation Army leaders, Captain and Mrs Pearse, secure its first hall. He wrote at the time: For some time past the corps has been located in a low, narrow building seating at the outside only seventy people. When you stood on the platform you could nearly touch the roof … At last a suitable property has fallen into our hands, a beautiful hall well-ventilated and well-seated, with accommodation for about 300 persons … I think the Grenfell Corps is in for a glorious and triumphant battle.
