Expansion
Soon after The Salvation Army got underway in Queanbeyan, its people pushed for expansion. Spending countless hours horse-riding to the various villages and properties surrounding Queanbeyan, the local officers established an outpost at Captain’s Flat in the 1890s. A report in The Salvation Army newspaper War Cry in October 1892 describes Captain’s Flat as a little mining township consisting of just one street. Quite a number of miners stood round our open-air, and helped us well in the collection, the report goes on to say. The half-past seven p.m inside was a most wonderfully enthusiastic meeting. Oh, how they did sing; silvery tenor, lovely falsetto, clear alto, deep bass and sweet treble were all there. When you want to hear hearty singing go to Captain’s Flat. Unfortunately, The Salvation Army no longer has a ministry at Captain’s Flat.
