Early beginnings
The Salvation Army marched its way into the Shoalhaven in 1884, just four years after its beginnings in Australia, in Adelaide’s Botanic Garden. The first Salvation Army officer for the area was Captain James Gilmore and the foundation block for the first Army hall was laid by a Mr W. Hannigan on 15 October 1885, with a companion block laid by Mr John Paul Faulks who donated the land and built a new Salvation Army hall at his own expense. On 5 March 1988, Commissioner Roy Lovatt opened a new citadel and activity centre in Nowra, a property that was formerly owned by the Baptist Church.
