In times of need

It’s often said that The Salvation Army has a ministry of “presence” – of being there in times of need. When what was described as the worst bushfires ever known in the district hit in January 1939, the Nowra Salvation Army officers at the time, Captain A.V Brown and Lieutenant Gemmell organised a group of Salvation Army soldiers to provide food and other necessities to the hard-pressed firefighters. The local Salvation Army history book records a very favourable impression was made on the community during that time. A year later, the district experienced drought and the history book describes local Salvation Army officer Captain V. Wilson walking six miles to visit a member of the Home League (a Salvation Army Women’s Group which is still operational today.) The Salvation Army in the Shoalhaven maintains a trained Salvation Army Emergency Services team, with a catering trailer, ready to respond to any incident.
