Shoalhaven Greats

Commissioner James CondonThe Salvation Army in the Shoalhaven has produced its fair share of outstanding Salvationists. Two dedicated Nowra Salvationists are recorded in the local history book in the 1940s as literally “dropping in their tracks” during service to the Salvos. In 1948, Sister Bailey collapsed in a Nowra street while collecting and died within the week. Sister McMahon, at the age of 72, walked miles collecting for a Salvation Army appeal. Soon afterwards she passed away after a short illness. God’s work can have serious side-effects! Recent “greats” include the current leader of The Salvation Army in eastern Australia, Commissioner James Condon. James was a Salvationist at Shoalhaven Salvation Army (when it was named Nowra Salvation Army) before leaving to attend The Salvation Army’s Officer Training College in 1970.
