Temora Heroes - Envoys Don and Yvonne McCallum
Present-day heroes include Envoys Don and Yvonne McCallum who were originally from Tasmania when they began working for The Salvation Army. They were posted to the highlands of Papua New Guinea to a Salvation Army outpost that had been abandoned after a bandit attack. There they ran a school, health clinic and coffee plantations to give the locals an income. (All while dealing with isolation, sickness, bad roads, the language barrier... although the local bandits, or "rascals" used to cheerfully wave Don & Yvonne through road blocks and THEN demand cash from the rest of the convoy once the Sallies had passed safely through!) When the McCallums returned to Australia they were appointed to lead The Salvation Army in the Temora region, which then included Griffith and West Wyalong, before retiring in Temora. Don passed away (or was promoted-to-glory as we Salvos like to say) five years ago. Yvonne is still an active member of the Temora Salvation Army.
