Early Opposition

The Salvos met with hard times back then, especially from what was known as “The Skeleton Army” – a group of local larrikins determined to disrupt this new “Army” that was suddenly marching through the local streets! The Skeleton Army used wire and rope lines to stop marches and during one memorable Salvation Army procession, the two groups met on a local bridge and members of The Skeleton Army seized some of the local Salvos and tried to throw them over the rails into the water! Despite the early opposition, The Salvation Army grew.
