Early opposition
The local Salvation Army history book in Young records that in the earlier days The Salvation Army was despised. The Burrangong Chronicle of 4 June 1887 said: The presence of a contingent of The Salvation Army in town has hitherto been treated more as a joke than anything else. In September 1893 the Young Municipal Council considered a petition seeking permission for The Salvation Army to continue in the streets after it had been fined for creating a nuisance – it was not granted! Despite the opposition, The Salvation Army grew and before long maintained a congregation in Young, as well as outposts at Monteagle and The Claims. (Other outposts in Nubba, Harden and Wombat followed.)
