Humble beginnings
The Salvation Army started in Bundaberg with three men standing under a gas lamp post. In early September 1886, Major Wright arrived in Bundaberg by steamer, followed by Captain Bob Spiers and Lieutenant Sam Johns to commence The Salvation Army. The first meeting was held on the corner of Bourbong and Targo Streets, on 6 September 1886, around the gas lamp post. After a few days Major Wright left the Captain and Lieutenant to continue the task of “saving souls, growing saints and serving suffering humanity” in Bundaberg. And that they did!
