Capricorn greats - Brigadier Flo Stockall
The Salvation Army in the Capricorn region has produced its fair share of outstanding Salvationists. Brigadier Flo Stockall was born into a Salvation Army family in Rockhampton on 22 November 1912, the youngest of eight children. She was the direct descendant of early-day converts from when The Salvation Army first opened in Rockhampton. Her maternal grandfather was Daniel Ivey and her father was Joseph Clanfield (snr). Their conversions formed the basis of our family’s Salvation Army heritage which is still being lived out today after six generations, said Beverley Stockall on behalf of her mother, Flo. In our family there are retired officers, active officers and soldiers who are very involved in Salvation Army work. We, as a family, are very proud of our family history and our association with the beginnings of The Salvation Army in Rockhampton. It was during her teenage years that Flo felt the hand of God upon her life, calling her to be a Salvation Army officer. In 1938, Flo entered the Guardians of the Covenant Salvation Army officer training session and was commissioned later that year. She married Captain Percy Stockall (who also grew up in Rockhampton) in 1940 and together they served faithfully in various appointments including five years in New Zealand. Salvation Army Home League (women’s ministry) was a real passion of Flo’s and she was very successful in this ministry.
