A patchy start

The Salvation Army “opened fire” in Emerald in 1898, under the leadership of Captain Maggie Reid. But just two years later it had closed, for reasons now unknown. It re-opened in 1906 with Captain Harry Flatt leading the charge, but closed again in 1918!

Despite the patchy start, The Salvation Army persevered in Emerald and the surrounding areas and is today a vibrant expression of God’s love in the area.
