In times of need
It’s often said that The Salvation Army has a ministry of “presence” – of being there in times of need. During the floods of 1974 the Salvation Army Flying Padre spent countless hours flying food and medical supplies to stations in the outback that were cut-off by floodwaters. Over the years, The Salvation Army in Longreach has also assisted during times of drought, providing drought relief and a helping hand and listening ear to farmers and affected communities. Today, Lieutenants John and Karen Jackson act as rural chaplains and corps officers (Salvation Army church leaders) in Longreach. Having supported Queensland farmers for so many years, The Salvation Army knows that rural communities go through tough times, as well as the good times, says Lieutenant John Jackson. Our role includes supporting rural communities in times of crisis and to be there when the situation is less demanding, but from our early understanding, the needs are increasing.
