Mount Isa Greats - Hilton & Joyce Harmer

In the early days of their ministry, Salvation Army officers Hilton and Joyce Harmer were stationed at Mt Isa (1968-1971.)

They went on to fulfil various positions in The Salvation Army, establishing the Army’s “Mancare” centre in the ACT (now the Canberra Recovery Services Centre) and spending numerous years as court chaplains to Sydney’s busy Downing Centre and Supreme Court systems, supporting both the victims and the accused through several high-profile cases.

In retirement, Major Hilton Harmer established a ministry to rough sleepers in Sydney’s CBD, which is still operational today, as well as a weekly food service for boarding-house residents in the city’s inner-west, which he is still involved with.
