Early beginnings - 'giving it' to the Devil in Townsville

The Salvation Army made its first appearance in the streets of Townsville on 29 November 1890.

A report in The Salvation Army’s War Cry newspaper notes that The devil is getting it here right and left, and: Already some of the worst and some of the most respectable have got converted, and can be seen night after night in the open-air telling what great things God has done for them. Swearing, drinking, gambling, in fact everything that was bad and nothing that was good seemed to have been their delight, but now, what a change!

The first Salvation Army officers in Townsville were Captain John Sando and Lieutenant Young.
