What's in a name?
The Salvation Army in Australia has long been known as the “Salvos” – a term of endearment given to it by the public it serves. But in the early days it seems that each local expression of The Salvation Army had its own nickname. Penrith Salvos called themselves the “Penrith Peneilites”. It’s not known exactly what the term meant to the early pioneers of the corps (church), but perhaps it is reference to the convict labour used to farm the area in the early days of settlement.
