Bowral's best - Sid Toone

The Salvation Army in the Southern Highlands has produced its fair share of outstanding Salvationists. Sid Toone, a Bowral salvationist in the 1950s, gained local honour when, in 1956, during a local flood, he returned to the gas works where he was employed and worked half immersed at times in floodwaters, to keep the town supplied with gas during the emergency. The Salvation Army newspaper, The War Cry, reported on 26 May 1956 that it is recorded that years ago the gas lamps in Bowral streets were lit by Sid, who performed the task on horseback. The horse was so well trained that if a pilot gas jet had gone out the rider could relight it by standing on the saddle.
