Beginnings
It’s believed that The Salvation Army has had a presence in St Marys from as far back as the 1880s, but the official history books date the Army’s beginnings in the area from 1955 when a women’s meeting, called “Home League” began under the leadership of Captain and Mrs Deans, on the front veranda of a Mrs Corkins’ cottage. The same week a Sunday school started in the Mechanics Hall which was on the main road to Penrith. The leader was a Mrs Wright.
