Long before the Newcastle Knights first ran onto the playing field, Newcastle had a different band of Knights. When The Salvation Army was first established in Newcastle in the 1880s, local Salvationists nicknamed themselves the Newcastle Knights. Salvos in Lambton called themselves the “Lambton Lions” and those in Hexham were known as the “Hexham Heroes”!
