Always about people finding freedom

From its early days when The Salvation Army band used to march down the main street of Wellington and perform open-air meetings, to today when Salvos can be found providing welfare assistance or running small groups; one thing has remained the same. The Salvation Army is about people finding freedom. Freedom from fear. Freedom from neglect. Freedom from poverty and addiction. Freedom to dream. Freedom to love. Freedom to make a difference. Freedom to live life to the full and freedom through Jesus.

In the 1920s a local Stuart Town larrikin returning from a football match lurked behind a lamp post to listen to The Salvation Army open-air meeting. An invitation to accompany the Salvos to the citadel saw Cyril Lang being convicted of his need for salvation, joining the Army and becoming a Salvation Army Officer. In the early part of 2000 his son, Commissioner Ivan Lang (pictured) became the Territorial Commander of the Australian Southern Territory.
