Early beginnings
Local records state that on September 18, 1886, Armidale Corps (church) commenced under the leadership of Captain Alex Canty, Captain Annie Wadson, Lieutenant Manning, Sergeant Gaines and other soldiers. During the following week, Captain Canty and his team left Armidale in the capable hands of Captain Annie Wadson. Land title documents (pictured right) signed by The Salvation Army’s founder, General William Booth, reveal a property on Beardy Street was purchased in 1905. Today, The Salvation Army in Armidale operates a church, a community welfare centre and family store. The Army recently appointed Court Chaplains to offer support to both victims and offenders – as well as those working in the local legal system. Armidale is also home to The Salvation Army’s North NSW Divisional Headquarters.
