In times of need - stranded passengers
During the 1974 floods in Brisbane and the northern rivers district of NSW, nearly 500 train passengers were stranded at Casino for four days. The Salvation Army and other service groups in Casino provided showers, food and blankets for passengers who wished to remain on the train. On 2 March 1974, The Salvation Army’s War Cry newspaper published an extract from the Lismore Northern Star which stated that Lieutenant Joan Pack, of The Salvation Army, armed with everything from sandwiches to babies nappies, headed a 24-hour mission by townspeople to help the marooned passengers. Heading a spontaneous wave of assistance from local service clubs, stores and townspeople, Lieut Pack organised food, tea, babies formulas, disposable nappies and even money. Lieut Pack was featured on the front cover of The Salvation Army’s Young Soldier magazine, helping to feed a young boy who was one of the stranded passengers.
