A joyful sound
Music has always been a central ministry of The Salvation Army in Lismore. Records show that the first band was created in 1892. The band travelled throughout the streets of Lismore, presenting open-air meetings at different parts of the town.
By 1923, The Salvation Army band was known as the “Silver Band” due to all of its instruments being silver-plated. The musicians received numerous requests to travel to nearby towns and during Easter 1923, a concert tour saw the band play in Ballina, Byron Bay, Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads. Various singing groups formed around that time as well, including the “Lismore Melodist Culture Class” (pictured).
Today the Lismore Salvos still have a vibrant brass band, although somewhat smaller than in previous years.
