Always about people finding freedom

Newspaper clipping of Mrs Isabella BruggyFrom its early days when The Salvation Army band used to march down the main street of Maclean and perform open-air meetings, to today when Salvos can be found providing welfare assistance or running children’s groups; one thing has remained the same. The Salvation Army is about people finding freedom. Freedom from fear. Freedom from neglect. Freedom from poverty and addiction. Freedom to dream. Freedom to love. Freedom to make a difference. Freedom to live life to the full and freedom through Jesus. Many years ago Billy Combo found freedom while sitting beside Palmers Channel. A tribute to mark The Salvation Army’s century of service in Maclean noted that people still remember the frequent testimony of Billy Combo. He had been sitting beside Palmers Channel desperate for a feed – praying for a feed – when he heard a splashing in the mud as a mullet beached itself at Billy’s feet. It convince him of the reality of God, and so he testified for all to hear. People also remember his playing of the mouth organ, the gum leaf, and the timbrel!
