Maclean's Mighty - Alison Cowling

Alison CowlingThe Salvation Army in Maclean has produced its fair share of outstanding Salvationists. Present-day heroes include Major Alison Cowling, a Salvation Army officer currently serving as Divisional Commander and Divisional Director of Women’s Ministries in the Maritime Division of The Salvation Army’s Canada and Bermuda Territory. Alison (pictured right in 1976) was born in Maclean to a faithful Salvation Army family (Major Annie Hoepper was Alison’s aunt.) Alison was one of a number of officers who attended Maclean Salvation Army before enrolling in The Salvation Army’s School for Officer Training. She remembers attending open-air meetings in the main street every Sunday and Wednesday evening while she was growing up: I often wondered if anyone was listening. One Sunday night, a man and woman heavily intoxicated and well known in the town came and joined the open-air circle. They followed us back to the hall for the evening church service and both became Christians. The next morning the man passed away and his wife remained committed to the Lord until she passed away. A wonderful testimony to the grace of God!
