Opening fire

The Salvation Army “opened fire” in Maclean on Saturday 2 February 1895 with an open-air meeting at the public wharf. The first Salvation Army officers were Captain Catherine Perry, assisted by Lieutenant Elizer D. Bloomer. In the early days The Salvation Army held meetings in the Protestant Hall, until it was destroyed in a cyclone, then the Temperance Hall on Union Street was used. The Salvation Army finally got its own hall, opposite the post office on River Street in 1932, where it still stands today.
