An Army by another name
The Nambucca River Salvation Army began its days as the Macksville Salvation Army. Its first mention in The Salvation Army newspaper The War Cry was on 29 August 1914:
Macksville is not yet reckoned among Salvation Army corps (churches), yet there are many people in the district who look forward to the time when the beat of the dear old drum will be heard … Last week, the strains of Army music were heard in the streets, the occasion being the visit of Adjutant Driscoll, accompanied by the Kempsey and Fernmount officers. After a spirited open-air meeting, a fine crowd gathered in the Methodist Church.
In 1928, The Newcastle Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army, Major Ede, visited Macksville and there, at 9:30am he met a drunkard who suggested that if the Army started in Macksville he would be the first customer! That settled it – the Army was coming to town!
