Making music
The Salvation Army in the Fassifern area has a long history of musical excellence.
When the District Hospital (Boonah General) opened in 1900 the Boonah Salvation Army band played regularly to hearten the patients. The band also made visits to the Fassifern Retirement Village, which opened in 1972.
The Fassifern Salvation Army band is still going strong today, playing every Sunday and visiting nursing homes once a month. Christmas carolling has also been a long-time tradition of the Salvos. Before motor vehicles, the Boonah Salvation Army history book records that a tabletop farm lorry was loaned to the Salvos, on which the band of carollers sat and played as it was drawn by horses throughout the streets. Later the band sat on the back of a truck (above right) The Fassifern Salvation Army continues its carolling tradition today, hosting the Kalbar Community Christmas carols every year.
