Our home in Gympie

For many years The Salvation Army worshipped in a wooden hall on Mary Street, Gympie. Later on, a hall was built on Calton Hill and in 1895 The Salvation Army also established itself at One Mile, although this didn’t last.

A two-storey brick Salvation Army citadel was opened in Gympie in April 1939 by Lieutenant Commissioner Dalziel. In the presence of many of Gympie’s leading citizens, he uttered these stirring words: In the name of the General of The Salvation Army, the people of this community, the sinners and the hopeless, children who have not yet gone to Sunday School, and those who believe in no-one this Citadel is built. I hope it will be an allegory to many dark minds. I declare it open for worship.
