Riverview Farm
In 1894, The Salvation Army set up a home and training farm for boys at Riverview. For a time it also housed a home for girls, and before that was moved to Ryandarra, Yeronga in 1898. These were eventually closed in the 1970s.* In the early 2000s, the Riverview site housed The Salvation Army Canaan School for Training and Development which ran a range of programs funded by the Australian Federal Government and the Queensland State Government, aiming to place those most disadvantaged in the community into the workforce. In 2007, The Salvation Army opened a new multi-million-dollar aged care centre at Riverview, now called Riverview Gardens Aged Care Plus Centre. The Riverview Farm is currently home to the “Watch them Grow” social enterprise nursery that is run by Bundamba Salvation Army.
* Around 35,000 children were cared for by The Salvation Army in Australia between 1890 and the early 1980s. While the recent Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has highlighted significant failures in The Salvation Army’s management of children’s homes, for many young people they were places of caring, education and opportunity. We would like to work with anyone who may have suffered abuse and encourage them to contact The Salvation Army's Centre for Restoration by calling (02) 9266 9781.
