A home of their own

Maryborough’s first purpose-built citadel was opened on 16 April 1887 on an allotment in Bazaar Street, costing £250. It was a fort-like, brick-fronted structure with a turret and battlements with merlons ready to protect the citadel. The building gave a clear indication that the Army meant war. In 1900, the citadel was refurbished and the fort-like structure at the front of the building was removed. Another citadel was built in 1963, followed by a youth and community centre which opened in 1980. The picture above shows members of the Maryborough Corps outside the old hall in the early 1900s.
