What's in a name?
The Salvation Army has long been known in Australia as the “Salvos” – a term of endearment given to it by the people it serves. But in the early days it seems that each local expression had its own nickname. Marrickville Salvos called themselves the “Marrickville Marksmen”. There were also the “Sydney Songsters”, the “Newtown Nuggets”, the “Balmain Braves” and the “St Peters Soldiers”.
