Expansion
The Salvation Army wasted no time getting established across Sydney’s north-shore suburbs.
The Walker Street Corps (church) was originally an outpost of the North Sydney Salvation Army but then became a Salvation Army centre in its own right. The Chatswood Salvation Army centenary book records that A number of cadets on being commissioned (as Salvation Army officers) were sent there at the beginning of their service. One Cadet on receiving her appointment to Walker Street let forth a ‘Hallelujah!’ and then asked ‘Where is Walker Street?’ It operated from 1931 until 1958.
Over the years The Salvation Army has also had centres in Cremorne (1929-1964), Lane Cove (1940-1961) and Willoughby (1924- 1973).
In 1975, all north shore work was consolidated at Chatswood, with the opening of a new building on the corner of Archer, Johnson and Bertram Streets, where it remains.
