The early days

St Leonards Salvation Army was officially opened on 28 September 1889, with the first indoor meeting being conducted in the Carrington Hall in Miller Street. It changed its name from St Leonards to North Sydney Salvation Army in 1893.

“Notice to quit the Carrington Hall premises” was received and the corps (church) transferred further north to Crows Nest and meetings were held in the Arcade Hall.

A booklet prepared for the Corps Centenary in 1989 says that the corps was to function from 1909-1975 in Crows Nest but the name of the corps was never changed and as a result for 65 years visitors went to North Sydney district by trains, trams and ferries (and possibly the odd horse or two) looking for North Sydney Corps but to no avail!)
