Always about people finding freedom
From its early days when The Salvation Army band used to march down the main streets of Kiama and Shellharbour and perform open-air meetings, to today when Salvos can be found providing welfare assistance or running children’s groups; one thing has remained the same – The Salvation Army is about people finding freedom. Freedom from fear. Freedom from neglect. Freedom from poverty and addiction. Freedom to dream. Freedom to love. Freedom to make a difference. Freedom to live life to the full and freedom through Jesus.
When Darryn Lloyd (pictured) started a job with The Salvation Army’s Employment Plus, he didn’t realise it would set him on a path that would forever change his life. Through the ministry of his boss, and the then Employment Plus Chaplain, Ray Allen, he began attending Shellharbour Salvation Army.
Over time he made a decision to become a soldier of The Salvation Army and then felt called into full-time ministry. I had a God-shaped hole in my heart and tried to fill this hole with so many things; my career, the flash car, the nice house, he recalls. But the things of this world could not fill my spiritual hunger.
Darryn is now a Lieutenant and is the Salvation Army officer at Cessnock in the Hunter Valley.
