Early beginnings

The Salvation Army opened its doors in Kiama on 20 December, 1884, just four years after it first began in Australia in a park in Adelaide. Its first officer was a Captain Skinner. It remained a presence in Kiama for more than 40 years until its closure in 1926.

Shellharbour Salvation Army was originally known as the Port Kembla Salvation Army with its opening in 1939. It changed its name to Shellharbour Salvation Army in 1987.
